Source-of-funds proof for Hong Kong banks: what the request means and what satisfies it

Current to 26 August 2026 · updates land in the changelog.

The 資金來源證明 request is where reviews are won or lost, because it is the one category that wants a story, not just documents. The bank is matching money in the account to an origin it can defend to its own examiners.

Two questions hiding in one phrase

Source of funds: where did this money immediately come from — the salary, the sale, the loan, the customer payment. Source of wealth: how did you come to have money at all — years of income, a business built, an inheritance. Requests often blend them; answers shouldn't. Label which question each document answers and the file reads as organised rather than defensive.

The documents that carry weight

The connective tissue matters as much as the documents: a one-page chronology tying each inflow to its evidence turns a folder into an answer.

Gaps: handle honestly, never cosmetically

Old money, cash-era businesses and cross-border histories produce genuine gaps. The survivable approach is stating the gap and corroborating around it (tax records, older statements, contemporaneous documents). The unsurvivable approach is papering it — Hong Kong institutions apply zero tolerance to questionable or forged documents, and a discovered fabrication converts a document problem into a legal one. Genuine records only, presented in their best order: that is the entire method.

Context that explains the season

Source-of-funds pressure is systemic right now — banks and brokers are re-verifying under regulatory attention, and mule-account crackdowns (147 arrests in one August 2026 operation) keep detection thresholds tight. A clean file answers faster in a noisy season; that is the practical case for assembling it before the letter arrives.

Quick answers

What is the difference between source of funds and source of wealth?
Source of funds: the immediate origin of the specific money (this salary, this sale). Source of wealth: how you accumulated wealth over time. Requests blend them; strong answers separate and label them.
What if I can't fully document where old money came from?
State the gap honestly and corroborate around it with tax records, older statements and contemporaneous documents. Never fabricate — regulators apply zero tolerance to questionable documents, and honest gaps are routinely survivable.
Answer the bank once — completely.

General information and document templates only — not legal advice. Organise genuine records only: never alter, backdate or fabricate a document — regulators apply zero tolerance and an honest gap explained is survivable where a fabricated paper is not. Anything involving police, the JFIU, a Letter of No Consent, restraint orders, personal suspicion or a sanctions nexus belongs with counsel, not templates.
